Meet the Doctors.....

What’s in a Title?  VMD or DVM

The doctors who work at Allegheny North Veterinary Hospital have the title VMD.  You may have noted that veterinarians at other hospitals have a DVM degree.  What’s the difference?  Translation.  The University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest colleges in the country, and was chartered by founding father, Benjamin Franklin.  The School of Veterinary Medicine at Penn is the oldest veterinary school in the country.  The original veterinary degree was written in Latin, “Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris,” VMD.  Later, when other schools opened, they chose to Americanize their degree to “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,” DVM.  There is no difference in the degrees, except in the translation.
