New science brings the opportunity for us to offer DNA testing for your mixed breed dog. Through a blood test, a complex genetic analysis can detect your dog’s family history. The geneticists at Waltham have determined 300 sites along the canine DNA that determine breed composition.
Why do we care what breed you dog is? This goes beyond pure curiosity. We know that some breeds have different behaviors and personalities, that they carry certain physical traits and that congenital diseases can be passed on through generations.
How can we use this information? For example, a herding breed such as a border collie or an Australian catteldog are very high energy dogs. We know they require a lot of exercise and play time and are best behaved if encouraged to engage in agility, herding or obedience training. If a dog has cocker spaniel as part of its mix, we know to watch for skin and ear disease. A dog with Cavalier King Charles spaniel in its genes could have a tendency towards heart disease. So we can make recommendations on training, nutrition, health maintenance and more based on your dog’s breeds.
